Although some may not admit it but one key factor when choosing a new tarot deck is aesthetics. This post explores some of the most beautiful tarot decks available for purchase.

This deck first began its journey to materialization in early 2016 with a kick-starter. The artist Matt Hughes had a very distinct vision for this deck. His goal was to pay homage to the original art nouveau movement prominent in the late 19th century through the early 20th century in Europe and the US. The art style of this deck is incredibly whimsical, and the watercolor pallet pairs nicely. The symbolism is very similar to a traditional Rider- Waite deck. The softness of the imagery makes this deck visually exceptional.

The artist Trung Le Nguyen, aka Trungles, is an accomplished young cartoonist and author. Inspired by aesthetics of the early 20th-century advertisements and children’s books. Trung says his favorite illustrators are Rose O’Neill, Heinrich Lefler, and Harry Clarke. Trungles has described his illustration style as “…lots of lines, and … many mermaids’’. This definitely shows in the deck’s suit of chalices, which, apparently, is based on the Danish fairy tale The Little Mermaid. The deck he created has been praised for its massive inclusive visuals, including racial diversity and LGBTQ+ representation. This deck is truly a safe space.

Personally, this deck is the first item I’ve ever put myself on a pre-order list for. Yoshi Yoshitani is another young accomplished illustrator. The concept for the deck surrounds various fairy tales and folklore from around the world. Yoshitani also created a corresponding book called Beneath the Moon. It walks the reader through each of the 78 tales used in the tarot deck. This deck also makes sure that there is an abundance of representation, this can be seen in the ethnic diversity of the cards to the LGBTQ+ themes seen throughout the deck, creating a safe space for many people. Yoshitani’s style is quite vivid, from her signature symmetry to the vibrant color pallet, Tarot of the divine is truly something to behold.

The Muse Tarot was the second deck by creator Chris-Anne. It is a uniquely feminine deck, appearing to contain mostly images of women and female figures. The aesthetic of the deck is very much like a psychedelic vision board. The subjects seem like they were cut from a magazine and meshed together with the most trippy backgrounds and whatever elements the creator could find. This deck has a LOT of visual energy and could be perfect for someone interested in eclectic imagery.

The Linestrider Tarot

The Linstrider deck was the first tarot project released by artist Siolo Thompson. It displays classic scenarios from the Waite- Smith deck wrapped up in a simplistic yet romantic art style. It seems to explore the human form and the animal kingdom in a fairy-tale-like manner with whimsical lines and dreamy colors. This deck is well suited for someone who enjoys a softer aesthetic.

This Deck is particularly fascinating in how it was illustrated. It appears to be intricate line work with pens paired with watercolors. Overall, visually, this deck is quite contrasted in color. It’s loosely based on the classic Waite- Smith deck, yet, there are quite a few ways where this deck diverges from the traditional representation. A good example of this is how the cards display either imagery from the plant world or the animal kingdom. With so much potential to resonate on a deep level, this deck could be perfect for someone just beginning their tarot journey.
